The Statement of Dr. Masoume Ebtekar, Vice-President and Head of DoE, to the 5th International Green Film Festival
Cinema is the most powerful language for communication and the change of attitudes and behavior. During the recent decade, it has been not only an influential cultural medium but also a profitable industry for those who are involved. Iranian film industry has encountered barriers to substantially benefit from the capacity of cinema in improving culture. Among the capacities of cinema, benefiting different walks of life is its educational potential which is hopefully considered by the eleventh government, the minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and the head of Iran’s Cinema Organization. Producing films on environmental protection, as a vital matter, could be a strong step toward saving the Earth and improving human beings’ welfare who are compelled to leave their homelands as the result of global warming, climate change, and famine.
During the seventh government, the Department of Environment organized the International Green Film Festival aimed at integrating environmental education in cinema. Four festivals have been held biannually up to 2005. The selected films from the last festival were screened in 1100 different places all around the country. Today, after ten years of silence, the International Green Film Festival is to save the fragile environment by a trend-making medium and an expressive language of cinema. This also represents a peace-oriented and farsighted Iran which is concerned about sustainable development and citizen’s wellbeing in a region plunged into chaos by violence and insecurity.
I wish the organizers of the 5th International Green Film Festival all great success and triumph.
